Best Cast Iron Skillets: The Bench Picks

Cast iron is the cheapest way to buy serious heat retention — and the easiest pan to buy wrong, because its real costs are weight and maintenance. These picks are spec-first and source-linked: no paid placements, no prices shown unless verified, and conflicts flagged where sources disagree.

Best overall

Lodge Cast Iron Skillet, 12 Inch

The default 12-inch cast iron skillet: plain iron, pre-seasoned, and priced for everyone.

The 12-inch Lodge is the skillet against which everything else in this category is measured. It is pre-seasoned, it sears aggressively, it fits most recipes written for cast iron, and it costs a fraction of premium rivals. Lodge states it is made without PFOA or PTFE and lists stovetop, oven, grill and campfire use.

Weight is the honest trade-off at about 7.9 lb before food goes in. If you can handle it, this is the default buy.

Strengths

  • Pre-seasoned by the maker, ready to cook
  • Excellent heat retention for searing
  • One pan for stovetop, oven, grill and campfire
  • No coating to chip — the surface can be re-seasoned

Limitations

  • Heavy, especially when full of food
  • Hand-wash, dry and oil routine after every wash
  • Handles get hot — a mitt is essential
  • Seasoning is not permanently nonstick
